It's that time of year when everyone is declaring their goals for their lives & announcing them to the world with great optimism. Losing weight, quitting smoking, exercising more often, being more patient or mindful. There's a plethora of different things we all want to change about ourselves & our behavior. But, I have found a way to set a better New Year resolution!
We start with such great intentions only to realize that by March or April, whatever our New Year resolutions were are LONG GONE. Yep. Derailed. History. Never to be seen again.
Yet, every year, we do it again.
Why do we put ourselves through it if we know that the outcome will, likely, just be the same? NO RESULTS & MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT.
We do it because we WANT to believe we can change.
We NEED the optimism in our lives. We do — & you know what? We are RIGHT.
We CAN change. We CAN reach all of our goals for the new year — & then some!
All we have to do is change HOW we approach our new year resolutions.
Not only are we setting improper goals for ourselves, but we are also setting ourselves up for failure.
So, what should we do about it?
The solution is simple. Not easy, but SIMPLE.
WE NEED TO CHANGE OUR MINDSET — THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT GOALS.
It is as simple as that.
Lets make a change this year that actually sets us up for success ALL YEAR LONG.
- Think about ALL the things you would change about you & your behaviors if you could.
- Think about all the things you would like to accomplish THIS YEAR.
- Think about all the things you WISH you would have accomplished last year.
- Write them all down if you have to. Ponder them.
Do they have a theme?? Can you narrow it all down to JUST ONE WORD? That ONE word should evoke emotion in you. It should make you want to get up & DO. It should empower you to do better — to improve upon what you've always done. This is how you set a better New Year resolution!
For 2017, the ONE WORD that shaped my ENTIRE year was “PHOENIX.”
I had SO MANY things in my life that needed to reboot, so to speak. I needed strength to NOT look at how I had always done things &, instead, have the power to reinvent myself. I needed to close some doors & open new ones.
As a result of my word “PHOENIX,” I reinvented myself several times over. I had SO MANY new beginnings in various areas of my life. Each time a new decision presented itself to me, I imagined myself as a bird, rising in a burst of flames over a pile of ashes with such fanfare there was no way I couldn't succeed! It was powerful stuff! There's NO doubt I set a better New Year resolution for myself that year than I had in years passed.
I struggled a little choosing my word for 2018.
When I sat down & thought about all the things I still wanted to change or accomplish, the overall theme had me leaning toward “FLOURISH” or “VELOCITY” (speed with direction, feel me?) but neither QUITE evoked a strong enough emotion to REALLY make me want to get up & MOVE.
I needed a word for 2018 that would help me get out of my head more… A word that would help me actually implement all of the ideas I have & a word that would help me QUIT SECOND-GUESSING myself …
For 2018, to set a better New Year resolution, I sought a word that would help me be more productive, in general, & help me build my confidence further, afterall, isn't part of confidence actually having faith in yourself & TRUSTING yourself to do what you say you'll do instead of always thinking about it instead?
Progress over perfection.
I needed to bust out of the cycle of constantly going back to fine-tune a plan only to never actually implement it… & to stop procrastinating on household chores…. I needed my word to encompass A LOT. Then it hit me! SO SIMPLE….
My word for 2018 was NOW. Do it NOW. NOW, not later… &, for the few times it just doesn't make sense to DO it NOW, then I can schedule it NOW. I set a better New Year resolution for 2018 with less thinking & more doing. NOW.
For 2019, I needed to step things up.
I felt I had made tremendous progress in the areas of learning to make transitions & forcing myself to take massive action. But it was time to be more intentional. What kind of action did I want to make? What was I lacking most in my life? Where did I need the most help?
My 2019 word has been ENRICH.
Challenges in life can either ENRICH you or poison you. You are the one who decides.Steve Maraboli
I really felt like I had a lot of the things & experiences I had prayed for over the years. But, I needed to step things up, make more of an effort, & dive a bit deeper.
For some things, ENRICHMENT has meant something different than I originally intended.
For example, I thought bearing down hard on my online studies would be a huge part of 2019. In fact, that is how the year started, but after much prayer, I realized, school was something I was meant to give up in order to have the time & energy to be able to fully experience other parts of my life.
My grandma was diagnosed with inoperable, incurable cancer right around the time I was choosing this word. I was afraid. I thought part of being ENRICHED this year would be learning to live differently — possibly without her.
We've adjusted to living a bit different, but thankfully, I haven't had to learn to live without my grandma yet. Thank the Lord.
And that's the other part.
I really, really intended a good part of my enrichment this year to be a closer relationship with my Father God.
I knew, through Him, many of the other pieces of my life would slip into their places. As I write this, it's only October — & I can still say that was absolutely the correct assumption.
There's also been an enrichment that has happened through learning more about my business & taking calculated risks where it is concerned.
I've grown so much this year. Even during the periods of time when my word of the year wasn't at the front of my mind, progress was still being made toward it. I can clearly look back & see the theme was there!
It proves that what you put your mind to starts to be put into place. God wants us to have our passions fulfilled. He's the One who gave them to us in the first place. If they aren't to do harm & they can glorify Him, I really believe they are OF Him — if you keep Him at the center of what you do… & I sure am striving to do that.
So, what is YOUR word?
It's the last quarter of the year. It's time to start thinking about how this past year has gone & how you want the next year to go. Set a better New Year resolution with me. Start now; December 31 to January 1 might be the official transition from one year to the next, but wouldn't it be better to have a head start on all that goal business?
Know what you want BEFORE the Holidays hit.
Lay out a plan & start your path toward it NOW. Don't wait for January 1. That's how New Year resolutions fail. But, even if you're seeing this after-the-fact, choose a word. A theme. Make a list. Don't box yourself in.
Set a better New Year Resolution by choosing one word.
What's your ONE word that will shape your ENTIRE year?
What's your ONE word that will make this year your BEST year yet?
I would love to know YOUR word for 2020!!!
